Dr. Alexander Weiss, from Edinburgh’s School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences, led the research that suggested our genes control traits linked to happiness. Dr. Weiss stated, “Although happiness is subject to a wide range of external influences we have found there is a heritable component of happiness which can be entirely explained by genetic architecture of personality.” I strongly disagree with Dr. Weiss’ statement and feel people are completely responsible for our own happiness. Reliance on others can help, but it is really just your state of mind that you maintain that guides you. We are solely responsible for how happy we are despite what goes on around us or happens to us. It is strictly our attitude; our mind is a dangerous weapon. Depression is a different case though because it is an actual chemical imbalance that we are having. Romans 12:2 reads, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” In the course of one day we are often challenged, ultimately remaining faithful to God and of a good mind, attitude, and heart.
People I know who seem to be suffering more than I can possibly comprehend seem to always be happy. They have simply made up their minds to be that way, not because of genetics.
Emotions are, in the most basic sense, chemicals and electrical impulses in the brain. The balance of those chemicals and impulses is what causes our emotions and our ability to handle them. Depression, for example, is caused by a lack of connection between parts of the brain, so that electrical impulses become trapped.
